Electrical Problem

I have a 2002 Excursion Diesel with 16000 miles
About a month ago the courtsey lights would not turn off .After a few days at the dealer they could not find the problem . then the following day they said it fixed itself. So I guess whatever the messed with changed something.
Ok now Im on a weekend vacation with my family and both bateries drained . Every time I stoped I hard to jump start it. So this ended my weekend early. Its going to the dealer now maybe through the door

Has anyone else had These similar problems

Thanks for your help
Jason

Electrical Problem

Yes, I had a similar problem, but was fortunate enough to realize it in time to pull the fuse ... and save the battery. The X is supposed to have a computer program that shuts down everything when the voltage level gets too low. The problem is that a faulty door ajar switch will go on and off, and bypass that "low level program." The computer figures that if you've returned to the vehicle, you want enough light to see. The door ajar switch tells the computer that someone is entering the vehicle. But when the door ajar switch itself has gone bad, you're up a creek without the proverbial paddle.

Once I determined which door had the faulty switch, I talked to a couple local dealers. Their quote was $110, including $20 for the switch. I bought the switch for less than $7 and replaced it myself.

It's not the easiest thing to replace. There's one little retaining tab that can easily be broken if you do not know which way to pry it. But if you're mechanically inclined ... and hopefully have access to a service manual ... go for it.

If you do a search on this site for "ajar," you'll find some more info relative to your problem.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply But right now I dont know if that is the problem now because the truck drained completly. Every time I wanted to go somewhere I had to jump start it .it must be a good drain because there is two batterys.Ya know with all the money we spend on these cars There should not be any problems. It would be fine if it was just me , But Im with my kids and wife in another state . I was really POed I was lucky my friend came with me in another car to jump me.
Thanks Jason

Tiler,

Do you really believe a bad alternator would cause the courtesy lights to remain on? The alternator may have been a reason why your batteries died, but I cannot think how one would cause the courtesy lights to remain lit. Keep an eye on that thing for awhile ... especially when it rains (very damp). I would almost bet money you've got a bad door-ajar switch ... a common ailment of the X.

Either way, good luck with your truck!

No I dont think the alternator had anything to do with the courtesy lights It is two different problems. The dead bat is the alt fault. The lights have not been a problem lately and I will keep an eye on it. My F350 goes to the dealer on monday for front brake rotors warpage and the raido just shuts off. Its never ending
Thanks Jason
