High Idle
I have a 1997 Ford Ranger XLT 6 cyl. 4 wheel drive
I got this truck from a friend. Only had it for a month or so has about 185K on it but has been running great.
I did notice a couple times that when I pushed the clutch in approaching a light the truck would jump a bit in RPM to about 2600. but go back down in a second or two.
This started to occur more frequently and now it does it almost all the time....when I push clutch in it revs up to about 2600 RPM.
NOW I can have my foot on the brake and let the clutch out to put some strain on the engine and knock the RPM down but its still a bot high in the 1k range. Sometimes it actually goes back to normal...
When I started it this morning it was fine....but after two shifts it started and lasted the 12 miles to work.
Any ideas what could be causing this? It does not seem to go above 3000 RPM when it revs....
Other then that the truck runs great.
Thanks for your attention and have a Great New Year
I can slam the throttle down in gear and with the clutch in and it seems to knock the idle down. Just wondering if you all have any other thoughts?
Happy New Year
An acting out IAC = Idle Air Control deserves to be on your idle woe suspect list, as its a common problem part. You might consider trying removing & cleaning it internally with a swab & plastic safe spray, like CRC, or Valvolene MAF spray cleaner & see if you get positive results. Cleaning may not last, it didn't for me on my 99 Ranger & is probably why Ford recommends replacing rather than cleaning, but cleaning was a good trouble shooting step for me, before I replaced mine with an online discounted/promo code BWG mfgr one, from Advance Auto, about 7 years ago.
BWG = Borg Warner, they make a number of OEM parts for vehicle mfgrs, so quality is likely to be better than a no name off shore part. Of course the Motorcraft part is good if you can come by it at a good price.
Some thoughts for consideration, let us know how your trouble shoot goes.
