Tim, I happened to be at one of my local dealers this week, and they had identical 4x4 SuperCrew XTR trucks next to each other. one was a 2014 and the other 2015. In a pretty non-scientific way, I measured the exterior bed rail hight against my chest as I was standing beside the trucks. The 2015 was about 1/2" lower than the 2014.
Visually, the trucks don't "look" different sizes when they are side-by-side.
I did dig through those links, and here's what stands out as notably different than the 2014's in terms of dimensions:
Overall Height is +0.7"
Width without mirrors is +0.7"
Track (front and rear) is +0.6"
Space between wheelwells in cargo box is +0.6" (now 50.6")
Cargo box inside height -1.0"
Cargo box inside length -0.1"
Front headroom -0.2"
Front Legroom +2.5"
Rear Legroom +0.1"
Front hip Room +2.0"
Front Shoulder room +0.8"
Rear Hip room +0.1"
Rear shoulder room +0.4"
So, overall the truck got wider, both inside and out. I don't really see that as an advantage, as it's already tight enough where I park. Possibly they started with the suspension and built it upwards from there. I don't know.

The larger cab is due to Ford marrying the superduty and F-150 cabs as a common cab for both chassis. The superduty guys are happy as they get more room and hopefully Ford will be able to spread the cost more evenly.
But if you go on Ford.com and look up the specs of width, height, etc, they are so close to one another that it makes sense to me that the cabs will be the same while Ford will use different front clips, etc.
So yes sir, I'd say more forum speculation than anything.
I have no issue with the cab sharing as I am not in the market for a truck, especially a brand new one at all. If it helps a company to be more profitable and then in turn if they could bring more jobs to NA then I'm all for it.
Sharing the cab makes a ton of sense, and will help spread the cost of all that new tooling for the aluminum cabs.
I'll bet they try to make the interiors look as different as possible, since they've been marketing these lines separately for years.
