Tuner Questions?
#2
I have no experience with Super Chips equipment, so no comment on what is available from them.
On this forum the leading V-10 custom tune supplier will be Mike from 5Star tuning Got a 1997-2010 V10 6.8L ? - 5 Star Tuning
When ordering custom tunes from 5Star they have you fill out a Calibration Request form that asks for any mods to your rig such as larger tires, regear, headers, CAI, exhaust system and so on. these changes are taken into consideration when your custom tune(s) is written for you allowing for the best performance improvements on a given truck. Various different tunes are available biased towards Economy, Performance and Towing and these tunes are also available for different Octane grades of fuel too (87, 89, 91 etc.).
My SCT tuner and custom tunes from Mike have made some very nice drivability improvements on my EX, the transmission performance improvements are huge!

What would be dumb is if you didn't ask questions!
Yes the tuner is a hand-held device that plugs into the OBD-II port, you have to be parked and engine off to change tunes, no switching on the fly. The tuners (most of them anyway) come with what's known as "canned tunes" from the tuner manufacturer, usually some improvement from the factory tune but not as good as a good custom tune from a specialty shop (like 5Star).
My SCT device has the ability to change several parameters, I don't make my own changes though, I leave that up to Mike because I'm an idiot and he isn't. He has done the dyno work with these 2 valve V-10s and has them pretty well sorted out and knows what works best with various aftermarket goodies.
Once you get the tuner any changes to a tune or even totally new tunes can be emailed to you and then loaded into the hand-held unit via a supplied cable from a laptop or PC. Updates and custom tunes will come from a tuner shop, not the hand-held device manufacturer.
If you decide to go with 5Star keep an eye out for a good sale price, they run several sale promotions throughout the year, I bought my SCT X3 with 5 custom tunes during a Memorial Day sale for about $350 or so.
5Star is also known for excellent customer service, so don't hesitate to give them a call for any particulars or any questions you may have about your rig and what they can do for you.
