I went ahead and ordered a Strange cast aluminum cover for the front, and Lube Lockers for both ends.

Finding one that fits

I have an 05 eddie bauer expedition and had a rock hit my front diff and broke the cover plate. I am having a lot of trouble finding one that fits. I really dont have the money to shell out a few hundred bucks on a new one. Anyone know what will fit?

You are in the wrong section. If you ask in a Expedition Forum better results will be yeilded. I would suggest an OEM cover though, not likely to find much for the Expedition.

my f-450 cant take an aftermarket cover...diff housing is 1 piece.

if it would, id go with the biggest one with the most blatant looking fins, temp probe mount, mag plug, etc.

I know this is an old thread, but for those researching ...
I used the '08 cover on our 2002 Excur, detailed it a little and painted it black.
We tow a 23' 7k TH and I was thinking Ford had a reason to upgrade the cover.
I also have the reusable gasket and thought it would be less messy if there was a drain plug.
There is a convenient place in the lower corners to drill/tap a hole for an 1/8" drain plug which works well.

anything that can remove heat is good.
heat is bad for the gear oil. steel parts, etc.

drain plugs? makes it easier sometimes.
but i like to see inside and see if any metal is in the bottom. (will be below any cover drain plug).
and i try to change out my gear oil every short number of years. or if i suspect a problem,.
but this if everything has been set up right the gear oil can survive decades.
but changing the stuff is far cheaper than having to get a new deff and gears installed. or a whole new axle housing.

that's just me.

i spend three - four times as much on reg maintenance than some spend on repairs. but i know i can start up and go... anyplace, at anytime. no worry's.
