hello, i just bought an '89 'stang gt engine w/ 99kmiles. i dont think i am going to rebuild the bottom end of this beast. but i looked at the bores, and there seems to be some surface rust. i sprayed the tops and bores down w/ rust penitrator. now my question is this: how do i get rid of the rust and make the block useable w/o tearing the whole bottomend apart? i want to replace and upgrade the heads, cam, intake manifold, timing chain, oil pan, water pump, basically the whole top end.
thanks
There is a litle honing tool yu can attach to a drill that can clean surface rust...i'm a little tired now and can't think of the exact name, but it works wonders.
If you have it far enough down to get in the bore you might as well pull the pistons out. Its not that hard. Just mark EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING so you get it all back in the same. If you dont you will throw a rod and bye bye block. I use a numbered punch set to mark caps, rods and direction of caps so it all goes back exactly the same.
i'm probably going to just hone the bores, and then reuse the stock forged rods, crank, and ifthe pistons are still good, use the stock forged pistons. but i will replace the bearings, and rings. does that sound ok on a block w/ 99k miles?
thanks
