1988 F150, 5.0/C6, just bought it this week, I wanted another truck ever since I sold my 85 F150 about 5 years ago. I tested my oil pressure gauge today, and it is bad. All the wiring is ok and the sender is new, can you buy a new gauge to install in the cluster or would I have to replace the entire cluster? I was thinking of putting in a manual oil pressure guage like in my 63 Merc. Do they sell ABS plastic guage pods for these trucks to go on the A pillar?
All the gauges (except Volt) are identical, so you can get one from a junk cluster and swap it into yours. The hardest part is getting the needle back on in the right direction.
Is there a site or something that shows how to do this? I know a guy who owns a tranny shop and junkyard, he told me to get what ever I want for my truck in the next 2 weeks because the crusher is coming again to do a little clean up. I can get 2 clusters for nothing from there, I got a sliding rear window yesterday for $40 and some other little stuff for free.
Is there a site or something that shows how to do this? I would prefer to keep the interior looking factory. Its nice to have something that you can get used stuff for at good prices, I am a diehard Ford guy and did not realize how much I missed having an f150 until I bought my 88 this week.
Just pull the little gold Torx screws from the front of the cluster, then gently pry the side gauge panels out. They're only held in by the pins that stick out the back into the film circuit.
From what I remember the cluster is all one piece after you remove the clear plastic cover. The black piece with the speedo numbers printed on it is all one piece. I will give it a try though, will let you know how it works.
