I just got an 87 f150. It has a 5.0, and an auto tranny.
when I am driving along i can hear a clicking in 2wd, not highspeed, but slow at 20 to 30 or so miles an hour. i got underneath, and turned the front driveshaft back and forth, and it reproduced this noise. I also notices my hublockout selector on my pass tire is melted, like a wheelbearing overheated. could the heat have done something to the hub? this is my first 4wd, and I am perplexed on how a transfercase even routs power! Any help would be GREATLY apreciated!
The t-case just disconnects the front shaft when you're in 2H, and connects it in 4. If you could spin the front shaft with the truck in P, then the t-case is NOT the problem. The shaft couldn't have even been spinning when the truck was rolling, so concentrate on that melted dial.
Look thru the Brakes & Hubs photo album in my signature link & buy a Haynes manual PN 36058 (~$12).
This is just a followup.....stupid me, I got worried thinking it was the trasfer case about to explode, and it was a stupid U-Joint! All fixed now with 4 new u joints, and it runs like new! not bad for 300 bucks, huh?

Yea, good news on the clicking noise being fixed, but I would definitely look into what caused that lockout dial to "melt".
