I am tending to agree with earthquake. However I will also add that it could be the pickup coil on the distributor. When they start going bad the vehicle acts exactly as you describe. Sometimes you can get away with replacing just the pick up coil. But on a rarer occasion especially if you wait too long to replace it, you'll need a whole new distributor. Usually with fuel related issues heat doesn't matter. Maybe coincidental, but doesn't matter.
Okay so im not familiar with the inner workings of the distributor. What is this pickup coil? Would a stock unit work fine, or should I look for something performance oriented?
If you have duraspark ignition, a stock stator aka pick-up coil will work. Try to find 1 not make in korea,china etc. Very easy to replace. Pull distributor cap, disconnect plug in harness, pull rotor , pull reluctor ring , remove vacuum advance arm from stator,careful not to lose itsy bitsy c-clip, remove 2 screws holding stator on, reverse process to install new 1. Can do it in about 10 minutes. If you have some use di-electric grease when you put harness back together.
