Yesterday my truck started telling me to 'Drive to clean exhaust filter.' Guess I pissed it off by not letting it finish its regen cycle. Today it told me the same thing, but the drive was about 30 miles so I figured no problem... It told me to drive, so I did, and about five minutes later it switched from 'drive to clean' to 'Cleaning Exhaust Filter.' About five minutes after that a big amber wrench showed up in the information center. After a while the wrench morphed itself into a tiny version and the information center resumed normal activity.
I'm assuming the wrench was the check engine light. I got to my destination, shut her down, and went inside. Returned to the truck about fifteen minutes later and the wrench was gone when I started her up.
All was well for the 30 mile drive home... and, of course, about five miles from home, 'Cleaning Exhaust Filter' lit up again. Between the last five miles and the ten minutes of idling I let it do in the driveway, I'm assuming it finished.
Something is not right with one of the sensors. You need to tell them you had the drive to clean twice and how far apart these events were and loaded/inloaded and speed you were traveling.
Took the truck to the dealer this morning and they just called with a status. They said the code that came up means that my driving habits aren't allowing the truck to complete a regen timely enough. Easily remedied.
Now... The dealer said there is a software upgrade available that will allow me to do a manual regen without running the vehicle, but it isn't covered under warranty and costs $139. How can a software upgrade NOT be covered under warranty? Thoughts on this so I can beat them up for the upgrade for free...

well, that is interesting.. never heard of this software for Pickups.. and didn't know it could be added.. we have been begging for manual regen capability.
I'm curious how that would work without the truck running since no heat will be generated. I'd tip toe around this one till I knew more. If it's to fix a factory soft ware glitch then it should be under warranty.
were there any diagnostic codes that the dealer documented? I ask, because 6 months ago, I had some similar symptoms where the truck would indicate it is going into regen, fuel mileage decreased, but it never really did the regen. Eventually, I did get a CEL, which using my code reader ended up being a P249F. Took it into the dealer, they said "no trouble found", reset the light, and sent me on my way. Nothing fixed, still getting regen messages, and poor fuel economy.
After doing some research here, that code indicated a problem with EGT12 sensor. So, I ordered my own, and replaced it myself(which I should have done in the first place), and it fixed the problem.
On the invoice, it states the fault code is P2463, and also states 'customer declined repairs.' Uh... yeah. Wrote to the service manager about this one, per Crystal's urging. Thanks, Crystal!

Sure thing, BCM! You have a PM from me with your case info; let me know if there's anything else I can to help.
No response from the service manager yet. Unless someone gets on the ball at the dealership, they're really not going to be pleased with their survey results about this visit.
When I was shopping for my truck and using the build your own tool on Ford's website there was an option to add the Operator Commanded Regen. If this is a $139 option at the dealer to unlock it might be worth it.
