When I bought my '87 B2 last year, I assumed that the 4WD worked. I mean, I pulled the lever to the side and down and it moved easily, but I never actually drove it in gear. Just the other day, I finally had a chance to take it out to some dirt. I got out, engaged the manual hub locks, hopped in the truck and pulled the lever to the side and down. Applied gas and nothing happened! Ahhh!!! Stupid me, I thought. I just put it into neutral!
So I put it back into 2H and then pulled straight down. The lever doesn't budge. Not a millimeter. Hmmmmm, thinks I. I tried shifting into 4-wheel neutral and then pulling the lever to the side and shifting into 4L. Nothing. No movement whatsoever.
So I ask you, oh ye of the Forum, do I have a dead transfer case? Or in my infinite non-wisdom, am I trying to engage the 4WD incorrectly? FWIW, I believe I checked the transfer case fluid and it seems to be okay.
This would be a true bummer if the transfer case was broke. I spent a lot of money on fixing the truck up! What kind of cost would I be looking at to get it fixed?
First I would check and see if the lickage is hooked up {from the shift levaer to the T-case} if it is then I would started to look for another T- case.I hope its just the lickage.Im sure you can find a BW 13-50 Manual T-case reasonable, they where used in Rangers and BIIs.
I hope this was some help, and good luck!
Thanks. What's the easiest way to check out the linkage? Personally, I'm thinking the linkage is good, seeing as how it has no problem going into 4WD Neutral. Unless that's a whole different system.... For now, I'm not thinkin' happy thoughts!
just to make sure, when you are shifting into 4L, do you have the tranny in neutral? With shift-on-the-fly 4wd you can shift into 4 high while moving upto 55mph(i dont recomenmd) but for 4low, dead stpo with tranny in neutral(or clutch pressed). also you might wanna check you hubs. just put you truck on 4 jackstands, spin a front tire with the hubs on both sides locked. if the one on on the opposite side spins(either directtion) then its not you hubs. i figured out the hard way that i didnt have 4wd either. my front right axle(where it joins the hub) is missing. got pretty far, did some cool things till i bottomed out and thats where we noticed i was spinning only rears.
Good luck with the problem
Tim
Good luck dude! I just did a quick search for prices on the BW 13-50 and found that the prices are kind of high. I'm comparing to the TC I had to replace in my 75 Ford F-100, it cost $100. New price I found was $785 with a $250 core, rebuilt was $495 with a $200 core. I have one that is in working condition (when it was pulled) that I would part with for a minimal cost depending on where you live. Email me at matt@office.bmi.net for info.
