Does PM-22a suppercede?

Hey fellas is PM-22a the same as PM-22?

I have run through 2 tanks on my new 6.7 and I am gonna use this stuff. Gonna pick some up today and just wanna make sure it's the same stuff.

I never trust a counter guy for accurate info.

I have never heard of just "PM22," it's always had the "A" at the end in my experience. But that's what I used to run before I switched to Diesel Kleen and it worked fine.

There are two PM-22's one is for cold weather and the other is not. I saw both bottles at my local Ford dealer...

Not sure which one the 'A' is and I so not want to assume.

No, the one for cold weather is PM-23.

I didn't buy my PM-22A at the dealer, but I paid $57.69 with free shipping on Amazon.com with my Prime membership.

Ya know... I was (this) close to pulling the trigger on that gallon and I just stopped myself and thought - man that is a heckuvalot of money for stuff that Ford didn't tell me to buy...
Still weighing the pros and cons.. My truck sits a lot in the offseason (winter) and is parked indoors in a heated garage where the temp rarely gets below 45.

I'm in TN now and even though it doesn't get crazy cold (low teens), I have always used Power Service additives year round. It sure can't hurt anything and it's fairly inexpensive insurance. When it came out maybe 2 yrs ago, I started using PS Clear Diesel to protect against water in my fuel. That is most definitely insurance (along with draining separator) against the dreaded water in the HPFP debacle.

Dealer gave me a real good price on the PM-23A, so I will give it a shot.

At the price Amazon sells it only costs me $1.80 worth of product to treat one full tank of fuel.

I like the Opti-Lube products. Their XPD product did really well in that test that was release a few years back. I also like that with a few clicks of the mouse I can get a gallon jug with a pump and two dispensing containers delivered to my doorstep. You can get $4.95 flat rate shipping at Diesel Fuel Lube - Sale on Gallons of Optilube

I'll also mention that at 30,000 miles I did my first fuel/water separator drain and fuel filter change. I didn't notice any water and the frame mounted filter looked brand new. This may be due to either good quality fuel at the station I use or the additive doing it's job or mostly likely a combination of both. Using an additive is cheap insurance if you ask me.

There is some overlap in the Opti-Lube products. They all basically include the enhanced lubricity, improved water separation and a number of other benefits. Here's my run down of the differences with rates. (They’ve recently added a very informative chart on their website highlighting the strengths of each product.)

Summer+ - Adds 3-5 cetane points. 1:1500 recommended.
Boost! - Adds 5-7 cetane points. 1:1500 recommended.
XPD - Adds 3+ cetane points and antigel. 1:512 summer and 1:256 winter.

Based on the treatment rate the XPD is a much more expensive product.

I contacted Opti-Lube and few things to note from the conversation are:

1. While Boost! adds quite a bit of cetane it does this by lowering the amount of lubricity additive in the chemical package.

2. The main reason for the high treatment rate of the XPD product is to get the required amount of the anti-gel chemical into the fuel.

With the winter blend fuel and moderate winter temperatures here in Michigan I'm going to run Summer+ all year long after I use up my XPD. I've got friends NOT using an additive and they've never had gelling issues so crossing my fingers

Thanks for info....I am in Atlanta so we don't see the temps you guys do up north. I typically fill up at the local Kroger....it sees a lot of traffic and there are a lot of diesel trucks in my area so I would have to assume the fuel is always fresh.

My main concern for the additive is the lubrication properties....I have heard plenty of good points on both the Opti-lube and the PM-22

Thanks again for all the comments

Opti-Lube has recently added their "XL" formula which focuses on lubricity.
