Enjoy it Roy! Not as pretty here. We are getting some much needed rain, but there was a lot of lightning and high wind with it earlier this morning. The entire 10 day forecast is calling for rain as well. Soon enough, I may be griping about too much of a good thing again.

The lack of rain recently had my pond level down far enough that I could access the recirc pump to clean the suction screen and clean a bit of the walls of the pond, before dropping a hose from the well into the pond to refill it. The fishies, turtles, frogs and snakes are all pleased with me again. I left it about 8" low in case the rains that were expected this week needed a place to run off.

Let us all remember the people who made the ultimate sacrifice so we can be free. Happy Memorial Day!

Old picture from 1971 at Hickam AFB Hawaii. Yeah I needed a haircut!

I booted in Great Lakes as well, but in 1988. I doubt anything changed there between when you left and I arrived.

I would've sworn the barracks were older than that Roy. I knew pay was higher by at least a buck a week by the time I arrived. I don't think military pay keeps up with cost of living...or dying.

About week or so after arriving ......my Company moved into brand new brick barracks. I went in as a E-3 due to having 2 yrs of college. My pay was $180 per month......... 01 October 1971 it went up to $320 / month. Boot lasted about 12 weeks.... The good old days....

Lackland AFB in San Antonio for me...Feb. 1969. 21 yrs old with 2-1/2 yrs of college behind me. My Dad was in the 2nd Armored Div. during WW2 from 1940 to '45 when the war ended. My Mom had a cousin that was lost at sea on the USS Indianapolis that you Navy guys are probably familiar with that story. I lost two good friends in Vietnam...one was an Army Warrant Officer who was shot down in his chopper only two weeks after arriving. The other was a Marine who was killed by a landmine. I always think of these guys every Memorial Day.

I think about the friends, classmates and acquaintances that made the ultimate sacrifice today. I think about the families who continue to live missing a family member and its quite humbling.

I like to complain about living in a crowded city, but I'll say the neighborhood I live in is quite patriotic (moreso than any other place I've lived). Just about every house was flying their flag this weekend and that can make you proud to be an American.
