wrong engine

i decoded my vin on my 69 f-250 flatbed and found out it originally had a 360 not a straight 6 300 should i go back to the 360 or keep the 300,the 300 has overheat problems probably because someone in the distant past put a 91 300 in there and i was told it flowed backward from the original i am at a crossroad if i go back to the 360 would i have to get a different bell housing? it is a winter project help from the ford geniouses would be nice.

1. It's up to you which way to go. The 300 is more miserly gas-wise.

2. A different bell (among other things) is required for the FE.

There are TWO different F100/350 FE bell housings, make sure you get the correct one.

D0TZ-7505-B (replaced C5TZ-7505-B) .. FE Bell Housing / Marked: C5TA-7505-B / Obsolete

Applications: 1965/66 F100/250 352 2WD / 1966 F100 352 4WD / 1967 F100/250 2WD/4WD & F350 352 / 1968/76 F100/250 2WD/4WD & F350 360/390.

1965 F100/250 352 4WD, 1965/66 F350 352, 1966 F250 352 4WD use a different bell housing, it's marked: C5TA-7505-C

4th digit of the VIN is the engine code. 1968/72 F100/350: A = 240 1V I-6 / B = 300 1V I-6 / G = 302 2V (1969/72 F100 only) / H = 390 2V / Y = 360 2V

1965 F100/250 352 4WD, 1965/66 F350 352, 1966 F250 352 4WD use a similar engine mounting system as 1961/64 F100/350 292.

L shaped engine mount bracket bolts to the timing cover, has 2 engine mounts at the front, one above and one below the cross member.

Bell housing has 2 "ears" .. has 4 rear mounts, 2 below the cross member, 2 above the cross member and the ears of the bell housing (7505 in upper pic).

Same thing applies to the 240/300 installed in these trucks, see upper parts catalog pic.

My suggestion would be to simply replace the water pump with one designed to spin in the right direction. The water pump on a serpentine belt driven 300 I6 spins opposite to the older ones. As far as I know replacing the water pump and cover and the timing cover would be all you need to do.

If I'm wrong maybe someone with greater knowledge can chime in?
