I have a 96 Explorer LX 4x4. It sparatically "slips" when changing gears (I believe between 2 & 3 ). Basically, it leaves 2nd, the RPMs climb 1000 for 1-2 seconds, then third engages and the RPMs fall to normal. It appears to happen when the fluid is hot and under light acceleration. It does not slip when in gear or when shiffting during hard acceleration. I have flushed and replaced the fluid -- problem still there. Any thoughts?

Well if you have your transmission opened up and inspected I bet they find your internal discs very brown and covered with what looks like varnish. The slipping was one of the signs my '97 made before I had to have it rebuilt. Another sign that mine made was a very harsh downshift when coming to a stop. I had the transmission opened up and all of the internal discs were covered in what the transmission shop called "varnish". The Explorer's V6 backed transmissions are notoriously week although they did get better the later they got. I wouldn't be surpirsed if a rebuilt is in your future. Expect to pay $1700-$2500 depending on where you live and where you go.
