This just happened to me a little while ago.I was drivng and out of no where the WTS light went on and stayed on.I was about 5-10 min from home so I drove it into the garage and parked it.I shut it off and tried to start it a few times .It did it again, stayed on then went off and stayed off.I shined a light on the controller cause I had a feeling that's where the problem was.It looked like it was burnt. The last few weeks the WTS light has not gone on but the GPs have cycled according to the amp gauge. The truck starts fine and runs.
I'm gonna go for a controller of course and I'm gonna check the GPs as well.
Controller and GPs were changed a while back. All Ford stuff.I have to check my log book for dates.Did I screw up anything ? I did see some oil around the area .I was thinking maybe oil got on it? I'm lost on this one !
Any help would be appreciated .Thanks
Truck is a 1992 7.3 Turbo F350 crew cab Dually .
I figured I would update all on my truck.I pulled all the glow plugs out last night,I was afraid that they were swelled up in the head.Thank goodness no !!
I pulled the GP controller out .I found that the main hot wire was melted on to the lug.The harness seemed fine as well as all leads going to the GPs.No oil on anything or fuel as well. The connection seemed fine as well.Just Seemed like the relay fried .The shunt that goes to that lug was also a little toasted.
I tried posting from photobucket but it will not let me copy and paste.
Any input would be appreciated .
P.S. On another note, has anyone used a curated diesel for a GP realy ? I want to avoid spending $$$ on one from Ford.GPs will be ZD9 motorcraft of course. This relay was a motorcraft as well. But just wanted to know if there is a decent aftermarket one out there .

that's pretty rare to see this system fail in the ON position like that.it did take out all the plugs? with the light, the volt gauge was down too? i guess so since things melted lol! man over by the starter (upper/fender mounted) solenoid where the power comes to feed the GP solenoid is a fuseable link.....that's what should have done the melting and saved your GP system.bummer.
i have no experience with replaceable GP controllers.iv not had to replace one yet.good luck.
to post a pic.see the little icon that looks like a mountain i guess it is.click that and you should be able to upload your pic from your pc.

I checked a few GP's with an ohm meter and they were gone. They are supposed to be .5-1.0 ,My biggest concern was them swelling in heads but I removed them all.Thank Goodness ! I looked at that wire and it looks fine. Its like eveything after the GP relay is fine .Someone else on another forum had the same problem and he replaced GP realy and said it was fine.Hoping it was a freak thing .
i can't quote a closed thread so here is a copy of what Dave S states in the GP sticky in post two of the 87-94 system;
"The other possibility is the relay contacts have burnt up.
The relay from an 86 6.9 engine will bolt right on top of your controller, just make sure you get all the wires back in the same locations.

1986 6.9 glow plug relay, about 30 dollars at NAPA."

Thank you , for some reason I can't post a picture .Its all burnt up, but I'm gonna go for a whole new one,but that statement is kinda reassuring .I read that sticky and must of missed that .
Another update ! I was on YB.com and posted seemed two members had issues with bad ignition switches .Guess what ? Mine turns about 1/4-1/2 turn with the the key out, lots of slop so for 35.00 I got one on the way.Should have all parts by next week.
I will report back.Hopefully if someone has this problem in the future this can be of some help.
I figured I would update everyone, so if someone has the same problem they would at least know what I went through .
I ended up replacing the GP controller .I put a Delphi in it.Of course the first one I got from Rockauto looked like it was taken out of a truck and one of the wires one in the wrong location.
8 GPs . ZD9 from Ford
Ignition switch from Standard .
I disconnected the fuel heater wire as well.It really does not get that cold down here for one.
I turned the key .The WTS light went on, went off about 10 seconds later .I started it and runs fine.
Tried it a few more times and it's seems ok.
My *** checks are still puckered with this thing !
