Either my gas tank or the lines above it are leaking. Sender must also be dead because there is no level indication on the gas gauge. So I need to take the tank out, and most likely replace it, but I've checked the online gas tank sellers and none list one for an Explorer. Any ideas where to get a new gas tank?
If the tank is rusted or damaged, why replace it. You should be able to pull the tank, and either repair the leaking lines or maybe replace the seal. You could also replace the sending unit if needed.
and the sender/fuel pump mount was pretty rusty. So does it leak just when you fill it up or anytime it is running? You should consider at least a new ring gasket. The old ones won't reseal sometimes. Chances are you can seal most holes with a metalized epoxy.
Im also having the same problems with the gas tank. I filled it up,
and it started leaking at the top.. somewhere. There are no aftermarket parts for 92 explorer gas tanks. The best bet is a salvage yard or the ford dealership if you want a new one wich they cost around $450.00 < yuck>
I dropped my tank this past weekend to replace the pump and sender. Got old one out and found brass float was cracked and full of fuel. Went ahead and replaced with new unit. Unit appears off some but at least works. My tank was plastic. Spray bolts with liquid wrench or pb blaster and let sit for about 30 minutes. Other than that took about 4 hours to do the job by myself. Had leak on my Ranger and found it to be rust hole in fuel tube coming out of pump on pressure side. yours might be same. Make sure to jack up back end of explorer pretty high and put on jack stands so you can work tank from under vehicle.
had a similar problem without the leak....the gauge was dead and sometimes the float goes bad...but leaks are def a bad thing considering gas prices lately
