Hey guys and gals i have a 95 5.0 2wd. Im use to building budget fox bodies and sn95s. I can get gt40 and gt40p heads dirt cheap. About 50$ a set. I want a little more power out of the old girl. Its mostly for cruising on the weekends. The real questions are 1 i would rather use the p heads for more compression. Has anyone used theses what headers fit? 2 im going to put a cam in it when i tear it down. Ive used tfs1 in a couple mustangs and love it. But i know the truck is heavier. Although i do have 3.73s in the rear. if anyone has experience with either of these id apreciate the inout.
On the question on the GT40s vrs the GTP40s I would go with the GT40. While the Ps will make a bit more power stock I see no reason why one couldn't just do some mild porting on the GT40s and have them milled a bit to raise compression. And while you could do the same thing with the Ps the bottom line for me is that you can get headers to fit the GT40s for almost any Ford chassis while the Ps can be an issue to find some that fit and still allow access to the plugs and not have to get angled boot plug wires.
Those are the easiest to swap directly without header problems. I guess when it finnaly comes down to it ill see whats more available, but i can usually grab either. Ive never had a set of heads shaved. What does this usualy cost? From what ive read gt40s 65cc gt40p 59cc plus or minus 1cc on either head. I usualy do light port work before i install them. I apreciate your input.
Did you put 3.73 gears in the truck? That is not a factory ratio so unless you changed it you have 3.55 gears. I'd also suggest using the GT40 heads but if you don't mind installing and removing the headers several times to get the fit you need then have at the P heads, apparently several here have done it sucessfully with standard longtube truck headers. As for the cam, your truck is on average 1000lbs heavier than a Stang so you will want a cam with about 10 deg less 0.050" duration and a little more gearing to get similar results, if you use the same cam you would put in a mustang you will need a LOT more gear.
It was my grandpas truck he bought it new. Im not sure if the rear was changed out with anothe. or not the tag reads 3.73. I Didnt think that was a stock ratio either. So i jacked it up and spun the drive shaft it does indeed look like a 3.73 ratio. I dont mind making headers fit. I have a welder i was just looking for the easiest route. This truck wont be on the Road for another year so i have plenty of time. It will just come down to what heads are available. On the cam though do you have any recomendations as im aware the truck needs a Less agressive cam because of the weigh. According to the weight scales at work the truck weighs 700lbs more than my last mustang
