If this was what you had to work with and you needed either fog lights or some sort of extra lighting, what would you do? I was thinking of putting some of those round driving lights on the bumper, but what do you think?
Sorry everybody, I guess my picture didn't show up. I have a smittybilt bumper that needs lights being mounted on it. I have alot of foggy days where I live, so I need powerful lights. I was thinking of mounting them on the bumper, but I don't know which ones to get. PIAA has some good ones, Hella too but I thought I'd ask you guys first.
If you would like to see my truck, check out the link in my sig. Look in the Ford folder.
Hella-PIAA-KC are all great lights. I would tend to lean toward a rectangular light. You'll run into some of the light above the windsheild on the round ones in fog. The rectangular light will emit a wide, but not enduce a reflection from the fog. Mounting them is crucial also. The lower, the better. Since you have a new bumper and you really want to mount them up high, You could hand make a set of visors to fit over the round lights to keep the reflection down to a minimum. Good luck....
hey thanks for the reply scooter29. I have a question though. About the light reflecting off the fog, does that happen to people that run prerunner bumpers with lights on them? About the visors, you could point them down couldn't you? If the beam is inline with the headlights that would be good too right?
I don't know about those square ones man, they look ugly. Good enough for my rollbar, but other than that they are ugly.
I think it all comes down to the intensity of the light and the placement.
Is it better to have them farther apart of close together?
It really doesnt matter what kind of bumper you have. In fact I would prefer the pre-runner style, because it puts the lights a bit farther out from the bumper. Dick Cepek used to have the visors in their catolog, but I don't know if the still carry them. I would consider making them myself. Using cardboard as a template, then you could make them up and fit them to the lights (at night). You can use a tree as a guide. Just park about 15' away from the trunk. That should give you enough sight as to how much light is coming off the top of the lens'. You would only need to make them about 2"-3" at most. You can make the final pieces out of galvanised ductwork (pre-bent) for about 5-6 bucks.
The rectangular lights do look like they're out of the late 70's.
For fog lights, you want a bulb (halogen) no more than 50 watts. The best type are the amber lens'. Not the clear that turn amber when you turn them on. They don't have the fluted lens you need for light dispersal. I would recommend that the lights be placed about one foot on either side of the licens plate. (thats if your plate is in the middle of your bumper). If you aren't running a front plate, make it 18" frome the center of the bumper. That way, you can still use your headlamps as outside the fog zone and the fog lamps for inside the fog zone. Talk to you later....
thanks man, I appreciate your input. I don't know if I'll make visors or not, depending on how the lights work. My bumper is sort of like a prerunner bumper, but it doesn't stick out as far. Anyways, thanks again.
I was going through my JC Whitney calalog last night and I saw some visors that might do for you. If you don't have a curret catalog, you should be able to find one at a news stand or a local grocery. When your all done adding the lights for the front end, you'll need some cab lights, running lights, rear cab lights, tailgate lights, under body lights or neon lights, air-craft landing lights, afew dozen LED's and you might be set for awhile!!!!
I love lights!! Talk to you later....
i mounted a set of 6" KC's behind my grill. They are really bright but i had to make a custom bracket to make it work because there is nothing back there to mount them to. They look pretty cool back there too.
Hey there byo71 and welcome to FTE! I remember when the Buicks used to have their lights mounted behind the grill. They looked way cool!
A pair of Daylighters must be awesome! Plus, no-one can steal them, if they can't see them!
Any other good ideas? Send some pics! Talk with you guys later....
