Question 428 engine build question

I want to put a new engine in my 71 f100 4x4. The stock 360 is wiped out with 565,000 miles on her. I sure could use some help deciding what engine to replace it with. I was told at a local machine shop to replace it with a 390. I have also been told to build a 428. I have access to a good 428 complete block fairly cheap. I want to build an engine that is good for towing and trail use. I would like the maximum torque I can get.Which mill would be best. Thanks Also can anyone give me web addresses or companies that sell stock and aftermarket 390/428 stuff? Like cranks, timing chains/gears, tall valve covers etc.

428 engine build question

The 428 was built to haul the big Ford/Mercury land yachts around so it is a real torque monster. If you already have the block, there's your answer. There are now even stroker kits available for these blocks so you can get really crazy. Most of the aftermarket stuff (manifolds, rods, pistons, timing sets, valve covers, water pumps, etc) can be had from Jegs and Summit Racing. The lone exception is the cranks which, for stock, have to be purchased used; the stroker kits (new) are available from a couple of places. For basic used stuff Ebay is a good choice or, the universal favorite of this board, Dennis Carrico at www.dscmotorsport.com. Dennis is a good guy who can help you decide what to do. Good luck.

You could also sell the 428 and almost pay for the cost of building a good 390. 390's are a dime a dozen, and have plenty of torque to tow with, not much less than a 428.

428 engine build question

Goodold71:

That 360 block and heads are identical to the 390, why waste money buying a whole new motor when you can rebuild that 360 as a 390? The only difference is the crank and pistons. Lots of places sell kits that include the crank, larry's perfromance is one. A stock rebuild kit will only set you back about $375. A 428 from a scrap yard will be a pricey substitute. And you will still bave to tear it down and work it out, barring any serious machine work needed.

Just an idea!

The connecting rods are also different. I would never pass up the chance to buy a 428 engine. If you can get a 428 for less than a $1000. go for it, you may never get the chance to buy one again. They are getting very hard to find.
