Steering box info requested

Hi. I dragged home a 52 F2 with Marmon Herrington 4x4. it has no steering box or column. Was the same unit used from 49-52, or does that go to 56? Does the F2 use the same box as the F1? Anyone have one for sale?

Welcome to the forum, and to our small M-H group. Josh has you covered on your steering column. I'd like to add your truck's data to my archive of F-2/3 M-Hs if you'd agree. Is your truck a 239 V8 or is it a 215 OHV6? Also, when you can, I'd appreciate knowing your front axle number. It will have R32xxx if it's a two speed transfer case model, or just a four digit number stamped if it's a single speed model. And of course pictures please. Thx. Stu

F2D2HM43556, has the OHV six. I will probably Ebay this truck, but have to get a title and try to start it. I may keep it, i have quite a fleet here. Wrong hood is on it, but it came with 3 extra doors and 2 doghouses. I'll upload pics to my photobucket, i don't see an option for direct uploading here.

I understand too many projects. It's a truck I'd like to keep track of if you'd agree. In addition to the VIN and axle number I'd appreciate the numbers off the data plate above the windshield. Stu

I'll post some pics tomorrow along with the info from the M-H tag. It is a 2 speed transfer case. Where is the axle tag located? I get the registry thing , I spent years doing concours auto restorations, and more with vintage Lotus race cars using English Ford DBA engines as the base. I also am negotiating for a 51-53 GMC 1.5 ton flatbed with the Coleman 4x4 kit. Definately need steering, I don'twant to strip another truck. I have all kinds of odd stuff to trade including for this type of truck, extra doors and two doghouses. Send me a PM with prices please.

The axle number will be stamped prominently into the front of the right side/long side tube. From your VIN, if the pattern holds, yours will be somewhere between R32-350 and R32-500. Your M-H number will be 6R32-4-43556. There might be an "F" for Fuller or "W" for Wisconsin at the end of the number showing the transfer case.

As you check the truck over I'd suggest looking to see if there are any frame fractures, and see whether the front axle long tube has been welded where it originally was riveted into the diff housing. These can be breed issues. Also, does it have its original 16" Budd wheels (#47210) that are unique to the F-2 M-H model? Stu

This might be better in a separate discussion, but I'll bring it up here anyway. As you take pictures of your truck please shoot some of the upper exhaust pipe and its routing. There is no way the stock 215's upper pipe can be fitted because it hits the front diff. The R32-4 manual lists a part number for a unique upper pipe, but no picture. I had mine routed based on logic, but would be interested to know if yours is different. Thx. Stu

I will have to suit up to crawl onto the trailer and wire brush the front axle to find the numbers, but not today. I don't see any welds at the tubes though. The exhaust has been monkeyed with. M-H number is 6R32-43556-W. This truck has the radio and heater, and a home-built external stainless steel fuel tank on the left side. Many photos hosted at arborigine's Library | Photobucket and a lot of albums of interesting vehicles are there too. Most I own, have worked on for others, or sold. this is not the original doghouse, but I have it and another, and hoods from F 1,2 and 3

Fine looking old soldier. That's how they look when they show up. Guess it had a mishap on the front end to now have a 51 dog house. I agree that the exhaust probably would not have been that way originally. And the wheels have me puzzled. They are unlike the ones I've seen on all other F-2 M-Hs. They almost look like the centers were cut down and welded into split ring rims. If you can see them better up close and they look original, I'd love to get numbers off the back rim lips. I'll also appreciate getting the axle number when you can. Stu
