Bought a tach today...
I bought a tach for my 98 4.2. Cuz it don't have one to start with, soi htoughti would install one. But i was reading it and it said that i could only use it on distibutor equipped engines. Do i have a distributor???? I need some install help. I searched it but i could only find ones for rangers and fear that it could be a bitdifferent. Any help would be great thanks!
I have seen several posts here in the past about tachs for the 4.2. Do a search in this forum and see what you can come up with. Seems there are some issues, but also seems guys have posted solutions and/or work-arounds.
Please, don't be insulted: not knowing if you do/do not have a distributor is an indication of limited knowledge about your truck engine. I encourage you to move forward with your project, but do so after much study and reading. I'd suspect there would be ample opportunity to dig a decent size hole for yourself by trying to install your tach. However, if you study and become more familiar with your truck, you'll find that knowledge will be beneficial beyond the tach project. Perhaps I overstep my bounds, and if so I apologize. I'd just ahte to see you get all excited about installing a new tach, then find you back next week trying to figure out why your truck won't start, or why the wipers come on when you push the brake pedal!
Best of luck!! and let us know what you do.
Thanks much.
edited to add: maybe this will help.
