Need bumper restoration or replacement?

My '68 Ranger is coming along nicely but I have an awful damaged front bumper. Any advice on how to fix it?

Find a good straight used bumper and get it rechromed. Or buy a cheap Chinese made one from LMC or Macs if quality doesnt matter.

And whatever ya end up doing, prep and paint the back side with gloss black paint ( Rustoleum or better yet Rustoleum with POR-15 as a base coat) because most chromers will pay little attention to it and it'll start rusting in a short while.

... plus a glossy surface has less surface tension and it will let go of mud/dirt/grit easier than a rough surface.

Know somewhere/someone that might have a straight used one? Maybe a larger resto part dealer? I've been looking locally for about 2yrs with no luck. Thanks.

Thanks for the tip. If I end up having to go with a cheap replica, is there anything that would help the chrome finish last? I've seen lots of the cheapos start cracking & bubbling fairly quick.

Except for regular washing and waxing, the chrome's quality is based on preparation of the substrate, copper deposition, nickel plating, and then finally chromium application.

The "best" costs so if you really want that contact Advance Plating in Nashville, TN. Advanced Plating | World?s Finest Chrome and Powder Coating

My brother and I once "straightened" a bumper by chaining the outboard side to a power pole and then in reverse gear applied a pulling force. As the pull was applied, I hammered the bent fold to make the molecules give up their hold. It was decent enough until we found a donor.

Last summer I was in the yard and walked by a 67 Bump with a painted bumper... I totally did a double-take because it didn't have the telltale fold over the bumper bolt. Upon closer inspection it had never been hit... amazing. It came home with me and is now mounted on my 70. The 70's chrome bumper then went on my 71 F250 whose bumper was rusted and twisted...

A reputable bumper shop should be able to straighten and chrome yours for what you'll pay for Chinese crap.

What about the rear bumpers? My rear bumper is bent up. I'm considering taking it off to straighten it and re-paint it.

I had my Lemans' bumper done back in 2006. It'll cost at least double the Chinese crap... 99.9% guaranteed.

I went the used route and found a good straight on for 50 bucks locally on Craigslist and had it rechromed. I also got a perfect front valance from the same truck for $25 and theres no reproduction made for that. Just search f100 in auto parts. You will be amazed what you can find. I havent had any luck at junk yards either. Good luck.

Edit: you may get lucky, a chrome shop may have one in stock. Just ask around. You will find one.

I would take yours to a bumper shop as stated above to see if it can be repaired first.

But its worth it. Much stronger and way better chrome if you use a good shop.

Chinese crap is like having a tin foil bumper.
I had a 63 Unibody rear bumper done recently and it wasn't too bad.
