HELLO ALL!
I NEED HELP!I OWN A 1989F250 460CID 4 X 4 TRUCK.I HAD TO CHANGE THE ENGINE WITH A MOTORCRAFT LONGBLOCK ENGINE. EVER SINCE THEN MY TRUCK DROPS POWER DRIVING UPHILL AND IS PINGING PRETTY BADLY.I WENT WITH SUPER UNLEADED AND IT MADE A LITTLE DIFFERENCE.I RETARDED MY TIMING TO BASICALLY TDC AND I STILL GET THE PINGING NOISE.IT SEEMS TO RUN MUCH BETTER WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD.SOON AS THE TEMP RISES IT STARTS IDLING ROUGHER AND THE PINGING IS MUCH MORE NOTICESABLE.I DONT WANT TO SPENT HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS AND REPLACE PARTS I DONT HAVE TO.COULD SOMEBODY GIVE ME ANY IDEAS.I AM DESPERATE.
Your EGR valve injects exhaust gas into the throttle body to lower combustion temperature which prevents detonation, or pinging. Make sure your timing is set properly and then check the egr valve for proper operation.
This vintage engine was also subject to crossfire. BE EXTRA SURE on your spark plug ROUTING!! I've seen this before, and rerouting your wires may be all you need to do.
