I'll be in the market for a Platinum. 3.5 ecoboost and all the Platinum goodies. It doesn't have to be an either or situation with a SD... could be a both! Be a great daily driver and have the SD for towing, hauling, and plowing...
It looks about like what is available today, there's nothing really new and exciting added. Spending more money on the Plutonium Edition doesn't really change the underpinnings either, that's just soccer mom bells and whistles to talk about after the game. And in the end, it's a unibody vehicle; bummer.

Unibody=great ride. Got an F350 for the truck stuff. Bell and whistles... yep, I'll take em.
Egg-xactly what we did...
got both - the f350 cc deezle for work and the Explorer Sport for play !
We may end up with a 16 sport instead of a Platinum too. We just found that the 2016 build and price is now up and running on Ford's website. Black leather is not an option on the Platinum and that is a deal breaker for us. Will see if that changes before production but I doubt it.

Didn't have the platinum trim level when we looked...
it was between the Limited and sport trims and even a glancing comparison showed the sport as the winner in our view..
Interior wise, we actually liked their two tone 'pleather' with the black seating with rich, deep brown inserts and the black 'metal flake' exterior...
but the two sports we found like that were sold before we decided, so got the black seating...
IIRC, someone made a comment earlier about the underpinnings being the same ?
the sport vs the others are NOT the same... trim levels, options, suspension, tires, stance, and obviously engine, among other things, are way different !
the sport is much lower to the ground than the limited, handles much better, etc...
have said it before and will say it again, MUCH better vehicle than our $50K Audi Q5 we traded in on it - both mechanically and fit and finish - Ford hit the mark on this one

The new Platinum get's the 3.5 ecoboost (Sport Engine) which is why we considered it. We did test drive a 15 Sport a month ago and were very impressed with the ride quality, seat comfort, and sound deadening of the cabin. We were expecting a sport tuned version to ride rougher but that wasn't the situation at all. Still kind of bummed about the seat color on the platinum. One of it's selling points was supposed to be it was using the best leather Ford has ever offered but if you don't like the color... Kind of strange Ford only offering it one way?
In the end, I'm still a V8 guy though. I really prefer driving my wife's 12 Hemi Durango to the Sport we test drove. Even though the sport is supposed to be faster on paper, the engine feels like a rubber band winding up when you're used to a V8. Trying to sell myself on one and at the same time trying to sell the wife on the new Explorer and I'll take her Durango for my DD....
