My '99 F350 4X4 PSD recently has started to "rumble." The rumbling vibrations and muffled sound seem to come from the front end. I have thus far been able to isolate it that when the hubs are in lock, the rumbling is virtually non-existent. But when I set the hubs to free, the rumbling comes and goes.
It is noticeable from 10 MPH up, but most prevalent between 25 and 45 MPH. I did have the left hub rebuilt after it statrted squealing whilst in free, that was 13000 miles and two years ago.
My fathers '85 F350 6.9L would do the same thing, but it was when his hubs were locked in and occurred between 35-55 MPH.
Anyone with advice on what may be causing this rumbling?
The wheel bearings. That's what is usually the cause on the superduties. The usual tests ie. jacking it up and pushing/pulling on the top of the tire usually don't work for these either. People up in the Superduty forum have this problem quite often and they don't find any play in the bearing but when they finally replace it the noise goes away.
BTW they are a sealed non servicable bearing. If it is bad you cannot pack it you must replace it. They're about $360 a side for parts alone.
