I have read numerous posts about the IAC causing the hum which sounds like air over a bottle. I have been experiencing this and plan to swap it out. My question is, could this also cause the poor idling that many have described (and I also experience) or is this something that can be only taken care of by cleaning the MAF? I'm a little gun shy as it looks quite easy to break the MAF while servicing.
No , you`re right ! The IAC valve will cause ruff idle, it`s about $85 to replace, bolts on with only two bolts. You can actually clean one out with carb. cleaner, install it back on, on unplug your battery for about ten mintutes to reset the computer. This may help, but if the spring inside is worn out , you will need a new one.
I had to replace the iac on my 2000 at 40k miles. It kept sticking so the engine would die at idle. I tried to clean it out first, but that did no good, so I replaced it. It takes about 10 minutes to take the two screws out and put the new iac on the manifold. It's a no brainer to do. I don't remember what it cost, but I think it was about $50.
Well, that seems to have done it. I put the new IAC on this morning and no longer have the loud hum or the rough idle. Entire process, including getting out and putting away tools, took less than 5 minutes.
