My old truck has 300,000 miles on it with the original 5.0 motor. It has minor knocks and pings at cold start. "When you rev it up you can hear it knock at around 1,800 RPM. Once the truck is warm you can not even tell. After 3,000 miles it will only be a quart low of oil. I been using 10w30 year around since it was new. Any way I'm thinking of using a thicker weight oil to try and help with the cold start knocks and pings.
The only problem that i'm curious about is, "will the oil pump stand up to a thicker weight oil such as a 5w50 weight oil?" I do not have money for a rebuild at this time so, "I am curious to what you guys have to say."
You could try switching to 5w-30 to help with the noises on cold startup, especially in the winter months. Only a quart low at 3000 miles is pretty good I'd say.
By the way, that's awesome that your 302 is original with that many miles. My friends 96 with the original 302 has ~270,000 and still running strong.
Thanks, although I think a 30 weight is not gonna be thick enough for this issue. The old girl is on her last legs. Been gradually getting worse over the past 15k miles.
I'v tried a 5W30 last winter for one oil change and it did not have any effect. Well it's gotten a little worse this year so I'm just looking for a snake oil to throw in there to get by a little longer till I can save some green backs up.
I don't care for Lucas oil additive. That's like mixing 80W140 into your oil making a 5w30 into a 20w50.
I used the Lucas oil additive in my old engine with pretty good luck. I had a tick and startup knock and it helped quiten it down. I used one quart and the rest 10w30 oil.
Thicker weight oil in winter isn't gonna help the situation any and will likely just do more harm than good. Just stick with a 5w-30 brand of choice oil, and keep rolling. If it were me, I'd substitute one quart if MMO in place of one quart of motor oil. It will help with cold, cold winter starts, helping oil get to the mains and cam bearings quicker. Any thing other is trying to push molasses and you know how well that flows in 30 degree weather, let alone -10.
As with any oil thread, it can become a heated debate, and I just wanted to share my thoughts and experience.
