no spark...help

Hello. I have an 86 f150 straight 6 with duraspark 2 ignition system. The truck ran fine for a few months after the ignition conversion. But, now i have no spark.

Reading voltage across the coil i have 6 volts with my key on. But when i put a timing light on the coil wire i have no light.

Can someone please point me in the right direction. Thanks, Jeremy

I would check the ignition module. Take it to the store, some places can test it. If it's blown out, I would make sure you are running a resistor on the coil + wire. If you don't, this can damage the ignition module and sometimes even overheat the coil.

Sorry. Forgot to mention that i had the module tested and it passed all tests. I didn't add a ballast resistor when i did the conversion. Could that be my problem? I thought it was built in somewhere.

Make sure you have voltage to the module.

You already checked the voltage at the coil +. Leave your meter with the neg lead on ground, but put the + meter lead on the coil negative. While you are doing that have someone crank the engine. The voltage should jump up and down of the module is working.

If it does, I would start suspecting the coil.

The ballast resistor is very important in this system.

Also. The truck acts like it wants to fire as soon as I release the key.

See if the rotor spin freely and / or goes around while cranking.

Do you buy a NEW Dist?

Yes. The distributor was bought new about 4 months ago. From what I read it sounds like it may be the pickup inside the distributor. Thanks for the replies. Jeremy

I would agree, if it is going round and round.
The NEW dist have smaller shafts so the gear slides on easy, but it is also just hanging there with a hollow roll pin.

Yes, I do.

From the distributor plug, first test the black wire to ground on the engine block.
It should be near zero.
Test across orange and purple wires of the pickup.
Should be 450-950 ohms. (some say 400-1,000)

Sometimes the coil in the pickup will open when hot.

Ok..so on the distributor plug the black to ground read 1 ohm. The purple to orange read open. I pulled the distributor and cant physically see a problem. But, its definitely not in the 400 to 1000 ohm range.

So..is my problem in the distributor? Thanks for the input. Jeremy

Yes, is it still under warranty?

You can just replace the Ignition pickup for $23 or $46 for a reman Dist at autozone.

Did you buy your Dist on Ebay for under $50?

Replacing the pickup requires some disassembly of the distributor.
If it's under warranty just bring the whole dizzy in.
Do not take it apart and then try to warranty it.

My distributor came with a lifetime warranty so i went ahead and replaced it.
The truck fired right up. Now, all i need to do is time it. Thanks for all the input and quick responses. Jeremy

Did you happen to check the reading on your new distributor?
I'd be interested to see how much these things really do vary.

A range of 600 ohms seems pretty extreme to me.
