'54 steering column replacement

I have a three speed manual that I plan to replace with a Fordomatic column. Can anyone tell me if the steering column can be removed with the steering shaft in place? And if not, can I do this replacement without the truck on a lift? or any words of advice?
Also where the lower end of the horn wires penetrate the column?
Thanks.

Hi

jepp it is almost mandatory to leave the steering shaft in the truck, as it is attached inside the steering box.

Just disconnect the shift linkage, and the big clamp between steering box and steering column. Then you need to take the steering wheel of and the small thing under the wheel. Unattach it from the dash and you can slide it over the steering shaft.

However I had mine on the workbench attached to the box so I dont know if the roof is in the way if you want to slide it of

The horn wiring exits on the opposite side of where the steering shaft enters, thru a large hole ( underside)

If you are replacing your factory manual shift column with a factory Fordomatic column from about the same year truck, please read this link below. The Fordomatic column may need some repair to the Park detent on the indexing plate. If you are using the same type of column, look it over closely, and repair it like shown in the link, otherwise your shifter could just slip out of Park into Reverse and take off on you, especially if the engine is running rough and is shaking. It has happened to me!
