CL is your friend for bargains...paid $50 for my topper/cap, but it was blue so I sanded it and primed and painted it to match the truck for about $30. Keep them clean and the critters out, and off the ground and they will last a long time even stored in the side yard.
On this subject, has anyone ever put a camper shell/cap on a truck with an 'over-the-rail' bedliner? I have over-the-rail liners on both of my trucks, but I don't see a way to add a shell without cutting notches in the liner so clamps can be attached. I've wondered if there's a way to mount one using the square stake holes in the rails....
Never seen anything like that, clamp for the bed stake holes...what's the prob with cutting a slot in the liner for a clamp? Clamps are better than bolting it down, unless you want it be really permanent...in that case use stainless steel hardware.
i've been keeping track on maintenance and fuel usage of all my vehicles using an app on my phone. I filled up the truck today, the gas mileage did go down. from 17.8 to 17.6 so gas mileage is not a reason for me to put the cap back on. I contribute the mileage drop more to the fact that its freezing cold here this week. So i did put the cap up for sale and will probably get a tonneau cover instead.
That is interesting, I have heard that using a cap gives an average of 2-3 mpg increase, not a .2 increase.
I've heard that, too. Experience, however, seems a bit different. Everyone I've talked to with a cap/camper shell tells me it makes basically no difference on the fuel economy. That's consistent with the OP's 17.8 to 17.6 change, which is very small.
When you factor things like weight of the cap and wind blowing the cap from the sides, having a cap might actually decrease MPG's a little.
I just picked up a 94 XLT with a nice cap on it. I am in the same boat as to keep the cap on or not. I like the extra weight for Wisconsin winters, but the visibility factor comes into play too!
i've had mine off and it will not go back on. i like being able to see whats around me switching lanes, backing up. Gas mileage did not suffer, I can throw stuff over the side. I thought about a tonneau cover but i plan on running this truck for a year or 2 until i can get either an xterra, or a fj cruiser.
