I have a 89 Ford Aerostar and just replaced the water pump. As I started up the engine I noticed a water leak coming from behind the pump. I have gone under & over the pump and see no leaks coming from it. Is it possible #1 that it can be leaking from the "front Plate" that the pump is bolted too? I know behind that front plate is the time chain or #2 am I looking in the wrong location.

I have a '93 3.0, and have done the Water Pump replacement as well. Did you use some type of pipe dope when you reinstalled your pump? Some of the bolts go into the water jacket, and you could be leaking from them. ( You don't say what size engine)I am assuming your motor is a 3.0. I am not sure about the 4.0 pump configuration.
I am a V6 and yes I used a sealer with the gastket. The housing looks like it is about 1" thick, but will the water penetrate through it to leak on the other side.
3.0 v6 or 4.0 v6?..... Could make a difference I'm not sure the two are the same as far as the waterpump configuration goes.
The housing on my 3.0 is about 1 inch thick also. The timing chain is behind it. You said that you used a "sealer with the gasket", that is all well and good. What I am asking you is did you use some type of pipe dope on some of the LONGER bolts that attach the waterpump to the Timing Cover Housing? Some of the LONGER bolts do go completely through the Waterpump and the housing into the block, which is tapped into the water jacket of the block.
You could be leaking from one of these bolts..........

Thanks,
No I did not use a "pipe dope" on the longer bolts. I will make sure I do that when I put it back together. I know that when it was leaking, I ran my hand down there over the head of the bolts and they where dry.
When I did mine, the bolts that required the sealant had a reddish color to the end of the bolt, about .5 inches up. These are the bolts that went into the water jacket.
You might want to look at the bolts for the timing cover also. Maybe you inadverdently loosened one of them up while removing the waterpump? I am guessing at this point. Whatever you find, post back, I'm really curious now.

My 89 was leaking around the timing chain cover. It looked like it was casted bad and had some pits in it. I had to put some Blue Gasket on it to fill the pits to stop the leak
Are you sure it is not trickling down from a freeze plug. They quite often develop pin-hole size leaks. There are several of these on both sides of the engine near the top and look like 1 1/2" round indentations. The way the water drips down, it is sometimes hard to tell.
I have a 90 Aerostar that is leaking in the front of the engine, or so it seems. Are there any freeze plugs in the front of this engine (3.0). I replaced the pump about a year ago and have seemed to have a leak since then. It has never been noticeable until yesterday meaning you could never see a leak. I didn't use pipe dope on the threads.
No, the freeze plugs are on the sides. But it could be comming down from the thermostat housing. Also, if you have rear heat there are a couple of heater hose that cross the top of the engine about there.
There are freeze plugs on the front of the 3.0's. I know 'cause i've replaced them both.
You gotta take everything off the front of the engine to access them.
Not trying to sound like a smarta*s, just my two cents....
No troubles JL........
For what its worth, there are also two freeze plugs in the rear of the 3.0's also. Along with I believe two on each side.....
I'm sure someone will be able to verify.
