I'm growing weary of being that idiot that drives for miles with his turn signal on. I'm watching the traffic, not the dash and can barely hear the clicking of the signals. They stopped canceling sometime back. The last time I fixed something like this was long before (68 Torino) airbags and multi-function switches. It was a horn ring and reasonably easy to fix. These new columns scare the bejeezus out of me.
What do I need to replace and are there any how-to's on it ?
You probably just need to replace the multifunction switch (MFS) to get the signals cancelling again. As for not being able to hear the click, I think that's an electronic flasher in your '99 and I'm not aware of any louder ones.
There may be a how to on replacing the MFS, but I don't have a link if there is. If you send me a Private Message with the specific request, vehicle year and model, and include an e-mail address for you, I'll send you a PDF of the relevant section(s) from the factory service manual.
