Can or should a person check and adjust the timing on a fuel injected engine. I was under the impression that the computer took care of this and it didn't need to be touched is this true?

Yep, it's true.

If you try to adjust the timing to something else, chances are you'll just confuse the pcm, and that's like fooling with Mother Nature.

However, you still need to make sure your "base" timing is set at 10 BTDC.

There is plenty of discussion on this site on how to do it.

It's also printed on the emissions sticker in the engine compartment.
