The rear end on my project is a 9" from a 70's? truck. The axle tag WDM-T decodes to a 3.50 open , 28 spline , 8.75 ring gear. The axle ends have the 3 circular dimples which leads me the believe its a 31 spline. Any ideas? I need to pull the center section to replace the leaky gasket anyway, I just want to know what to expect to see.
I'd like to put the 3.50 in my 71 mustang with 28 spline axles. The 2.75 in it now would go in the truck if the splines match.
All WDM rear axles except the following have 28 spline axle shafts (C8TZ-4234-A) / Only WDM-H or J or AHor AJ have 31 spline axle shafts (C8TZ-4234-B).
1971 Mustang 9" could have 28 or 31 spline axle shafts.
F100/F150 9's: R/L axle shafts are the same / Mustang and etc. Passenger Cars with 9's have specific R & L axle shafts.
The mustang is definitely 28 spline. So a direct swap should be possible?
28 spline: The carrier (aka pumpkin): Yes / The axle shafts: No.
btw: If you are planning to replace the differential bearings, there are two different types.
1970/73 Mustang will have "slim line" bearings. Depending on what year the F100's rear axle is from, it might have slim line bearings, might not.
There are two types of the non slim line bearings: Medium & Large.
WDM-T with 8 3/4" ring gear: 1968/69 & 1970 before serial number J30,001 have medium differential bearings. 1970from serial number J30,001 & 1971/86 have slim line bearings.
These bearings have a BIN (Bearing Industry Number) stamped on them. BIN's are what auto parts stores & bearing shops go by.
