I have a 94 PSD and want to make it louder. Plus the muffler and cat are starting to rust off. Can I use straight pipe to replace the cat and muffler without loosing power? Someone told me that the turbo creates enough back pressure for the engine. Is this true or will hurt my performance by doing this? Any other downsides to this?
I love my str8pipe. There is only a downside if you don't like it loud (which of course means you're too old). Yes to the "turbo creates enough packpressure" comment.
I am all about loud trucks - cars - choppers - etc , but to me , a PSD with a straightpipe does not sound good. The best way to describe it would be a weed wacker on crack. The 4'' and 5'' exhausts with mufflers is the way to go , in my opinion.
And yes , the turbo creates all the backpressure you could ever want..........
Personally, I have the 4" Bullydog exhaust and I think it sounds great. However, a lot of my friends have straight piped their PSD's and I think they sound great also. I love to hear the deep tone and turbo flutter from a straight piped PSD.
The one thing I like best about my roomates cummins is that you can hear the turbo shrill really well. My PSD I have to hit like 3 on the tach before you start to hear it. And I rarely run it that high before I grab another gear. Will the straight pipe help make the turbo louder?
Check my site, I have audio file of open 4" exhaust. Comes out in front of rear tire. You can sure hear the turbo, maybe to good!

Honda.. Here is a page with audio file ..let it load completely. This is on my 99,, dont know for sure what your 94 will sound like. Does it have a turbo? Forgive my ignorance.. havent delt with diesels till I got my Early 99. I love it. As stated in the above post you really hear the turbo. Mine is totaly stock exhaust with a straight pipe where muffler goes...exits behind the wheel,, , didnt want to have to keep wheel clean.
Thanks you guys. I ran a straight pipe from the downpipe back to where the muffler meets the tail pipe (didn't want to rebend all that). Thing sounds great, not annoyingly loud but has a real good deep tone and the turbo sounds great. + its still as quiet as a diesel can be at idle.
