The passenger side power window just stopped working on my 97 F150 supercab. Has anyone on this site ever tried to replace the motor? How difficult is it? Money is tight right now and I would really like to try and fix it myself. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. I checked all the wiring, fuses and switches and they all appear to be in order.
Exactly the same thing has happened on my 98 F150 supercab. The left window works fine. The right window will not work with either the driver side switch or the passenger side switch.
Turn the key to run position, and turn on the dome lamp. Operate the switch in both directions and watch the dome lamp. Does the dome lamp dim when operating the switch in both directions? If so the motor is locked up. If it only dims one direction or not at all you have a circuit problem 99 percent of the time. Only on rare occasion would the motor itself have an open circuit. The dimming of the dome lamp indicates a draw from the motor.
I'll try that. Thanks. Someone suggested to me to first look for a fuse or relay. I don't see power windows in the fuse/relay lists in my 98 F150 owner's manual...surprised me. Albeit, I'd think neither window would work if it were a fuse/relay problem, unless of course there were two separate fuses or relays. Anyway, I haven't found a power window fuse or relay listed. At a loss here with this. So, I'll try your suggestion. Again, thanks.
Thanks for the tips guys, I decided to tackle the problem on my own and I fixed it . The motor was fine. Once I removed it I tried it again and it worked. That was weeks ago and until now it has worked fine. It seems to be a bit nosier this time as it goes up and down but otherwise it works just fine. The job did take a good while since I had never attempted this kind of repair before. But now that I know the intracacies, it will be a snap to fix if the other window if it ever fails on me.
OK, it's definitely the motor. Before dismounting the old motor, I simply held the new motor near the connectors, turned the power on, and worked the switch. Guess what? The new motor gear turned! Now my concern is the mounting. I see some pop rivets. Assume I have to drill these out now. I'm worried because this after market motor doesn't SEEM to be ready to mount back into the old motor's holes. Am I drilling new holes?
The rivets hold in the regulator. It isnt necessary to remove the regulator. The motor is held in by 3 bolts usually with 8mm heads. On late model vehicles the holes to access those screws are pre drilled. On earlier models you have to look for 3 staked indentions, and drill out those to approximately 1/2 inch to see and access the three bolts that hold in the motor.
