I have both a 6.0 and a v10 excursion. The 6.0 wins hands down. The power and feel of hte engine. Currently my 6.0 is in my garage waiting on EGR and oil cooler gasket fixing. And my v10 is in hte driveway while I'm taking apart the transfer case to find the leak there, as well as the front passenger wheel hub rebuild.
My 6.0 has 235k on it, my v10 has 130k on it. Everything has issues that can go wrong, there's no argueing that. The 6.0 could have a bad injector, or the v10 could blow a plug out. Both major fixes, but I've encountered neither.
Neither are bad trucks. If you can afford hte diesel, get the diesel. Otherwise, get the v10. Just don't get the v8.
Thanks for your input. And no I won't be going with a v8. Haha. Barely enough power for my F150.
And because of your Budget the V10 is the better choice for you!
I've had both, there is no comparison between both, the 6.0 is a true beast but in my opinion needs some coin to make it all that! I have more $$ under my hood alone than most have into there EX total. I love the insane power and sound of the 6.0 and could never go back to the V10....
Don't get me wrong the V10 was very good to me, probably the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Just a different toy
Very true. I've only been stranded once in my life in a Ford and it was a 6.0l F350. Guess that should tell me something right there. What do you mean by " questionable upgrades"? Thanks for your help.
There are two quarter sized holes on the side of the air filter box. I plugged those up to prevent hot engine air going into the intake. Then I drilled a 2" hole in the wall next to the radiator in front of the air filter intake to fake a "ram air" intake. I went from 6.5mpg to 9.5-10mpg towing. Also regular highway driving went from 9mpg to about 11-12 mpg.

DITO. I paid $6180 for mine.
Also if you're camping, the v10 is quiet!

Yes I'm starting to lean towards the V10. Makes more sense for my needs. Still would be nice to have a torque monster diesel dome day. Haha. Thanks again.
I bought my 2003 Limited V10 about 6 weeks ago. Best vehicle I have ever owned - no regrets. The V10 is powerful and smooth as silk. Could not afford the initial purchase price and ongoing maintenance for a diesel. Was the right choice for me.

Wow that's pretty impressive. Did you get a lift for a excursion or was it for a F250? From what I understand they are the same just stiffer springs for the F250. Thanks for your input.
I didn't buy a kit for my lift, I swapped in SuperDuty springs. Rears are B codes and fronts are snow plow prep X codes from the same F-350, both sets have extra leaves and I have the taller one ton blocks. This swap netted me 3 7/8" in the front and 4.5" in back. Makes the EX a much more stable tow platform, I would recommend this swap (with either V, W or X codes) for any EX towing heavy, gas or diesel.

So if a guy was to go shopping at the wreckers he could piece together a pretty cheap lift with F350 springs? Just have to buy shocks and drop pitman arm. That's pretty sweet. How's the ride quality now?

Even better than that, no drop pitman needed and would only need front shocks, the rears should be fine as long as you are not flexing it out off road. If you go part hunting just look at the door sticker of the donor truck. Checkout the tech folder here on this forum for the spring swap details, nice mod but the parts are heavy!
As far as the ride quality, well it now rides like a empty one ton pickup when running solo and mellows out a lot with the 1400lb tongue weight camper dragging behind it.
You have lots of options to prep the stock suspension for serious towing, spring swap, air bags, RAS, combinations of these options and more. All are improvements over stock and with some research you can get it dialed in to exactly what you want or need.
Comparing a blown spark plug to a blown injector is ridiculous. For less then $150 (maybe much less) and an hour tops you have your plug back in and on your way. From everything I've heard injector work on a PSD is expensive...much more so then a spark plug, coil and thread kit.
A blown spark plug is NOT a "Major" Issue by any means. I've had my 5.4 blow a plug and caught 5 more from blowing by paying attention to the engine. Never had an issue with any of my V10s 2000,2002,2004.
I'm on my third V10 and they are better then sliced bread! they start right up every time, great heat in the cold, cost next to nothing to maintain, they are much cheaper to buy up front. Diesels are not for everyone, one of those people being me. I'll only own gas trucks, they both have positives and negatives...some other people would not daily drive something 40+ miles a day that gets less them 10mpg but it doesn't bother me.
I had a F250 with a Oh No Six O for 3 years and it was in the shop about 15 times over that 3 years. If it werent for the extended warranty it would have broke me. Four of the fifteen times it was in the shop was over $3k. I have had a 05 Ex V10 for 137k miles and it has given me no more than $1k in problems over its lifetime-----So I say hands down V10. I could go on and on about clients with 6 leaker stories but youve heard them all too often in the last 11 years they have been around. It all boils down to--Are you feelin' lucky?
