This is on a 58 Stepside... I know that there are eight bolts that need to be removed either by torch or grinding under the bed.... Here is my question.... The bed has diamond plated sheet metal welded to it (on top of the old frame/wood) which appears to be covering the heads on the bolts.... In order to reinstall the bed... It appears that I am going to have to remove the sheet metal to remove the bolts completly for the reinstall.... I am thinking about going to a wood bed since the bed frame appears to be tact....
Any advise on this is greatly appreciated.... Thanks! Mike
MIke you are right, The head of the bolts are under the Dimond plate. There is a Lip, that is part of the bed side. About 1 1/8" wide that the origonal bolts went thru into the bed wood and then the bed supports. The origonal bed wood was under the Lip and between the bed supports. There for you must remove the Dimond plate first. Unless you plan on putting the wood over the Lip.which is not correct. Jim VA.
If the diamond plate covers the entire bed area, I would ake a circular saw with a metal cutting blade and cut the diamond plate about an inch and a half away from the lip on the bed sides. Otherwise you might mess up the lip and ruin the bed sides. It's easier to work with a smaller area when grinding than the larger area. You also might want to look at the original lip to see if it will be thick enough to use to bolt the bed back together. If worse came to worse and you could not get the diamond plate ground off, you could drill through the diamond plate and run your new bolt through it into the bed wood. The bed side and lip would go on top of the wood, as original but the lip would be thicker and I might add sturdier.
When looking at the bottom of the bed all the old wood and bolts are still present..... I figure I would start by removing whatever bolts I can to get the wood out etc... I have a friend that has a welding torch, that I might get to cut the plate out.... Thanks for all the information....
