Ok guys, I know this topic has been bled dry on more than one occasion but bare with me for a sec here. I got a 1992 ford f 350 dually that I REALLY want to convert to a 4 WD 4x4. I plan on finding a doaner truck that rolled or something and just take all the 4x4 components off of it and use them on mine but does anyone know of any problems or tricks I should know about before I start this project??
For example, mechanical parts are mechanical parts and will work when installed right but will I need to get a diffrent computer for this conversion? Keep in mind I don't believe in automatic locking hubs so I'll be using a set of Warn mechanicals.
well if you get the same truck to part off of then it should be fine, it will be very exspensive for you to find that new of a dana 60 but its not imposible.
it'll be hard finding one in a dually. but if you get from about 92-to 98 f250 or f350 single wheel 4x4 it'll have the D60 up front to swap over with ease, you can get a kit to convert it over to the dually syle bolt pattern. just be sure you get one with the same motor and cab style as yours so the tranny and shafts can be swapped over.
Why do I need a special front end for a dually. Why can't i just get a front set up out of a 350 4x4 and match the gears with what I have in my dual rear end??
well you dont need the exact front end for it to genericly work. the easiest swap possible that would be a durrect swapover for yourself would have to be around the same model of dana60 from a superduty just so you dont have anyproblems with your ABS hookup and frame allighnment, If you get an older dana60, depending on the year, you might have to custom fab a crossmember for the leaf spring perches
Look at te hubs on a dually and a Single Wheel F350, You can even look on the 2wd trucks. The Dually has a bigger rotor Then a single wheel, With bigger studs. The dually also uses a diffirent offset then the Single wheel F350's.
