I am preparing to replace my fan clutch (Going to buy one today) for my 95 f150 302. Do I need any special tools or other stuff to replace it, or can I just use a rachet set?
You are going to need a socket set, of course, and I would suggest torquing the bolts back on with a torque wrench so they are tightened properly. I put them back on too tightly once and snapped one off. Then had to drill it back out and replace. What a nightmare.
You'll also need a pretty long socket wrench or breaker bar to release the tension on the belt tensioner so you can get the serpentine belt off.
You may also need some sort of puller to get the fan clutch assembly off the water pump shaft. Pounding it off with a rubber mallet will work, but is not as elegant.
I replaced the fan clutch and it turns out that was not the problem, it was the carrier bearing on the drive shaft, a 22 dollar part. But, we had to completely remove the drive shaft, machine off the old bearing, and force on the new one. Overall spent 6 hours working on it and driving it yesterday, but NO MORE NOISES!!!
