My heat/AC wont switch from vent. it turns off and on ok but it wont let me switch from vent to defrost or floor. Bad vacuum motor or broke door hinge.

ALedbetter1,

Normally, the complaint is that the system stays on defrost, which is how it is designed if something goes wrong with the vacuum system. Ford engineers thought that for safety's sake, it would be best if the driver could see, rather than be comfortable, so defrost is the default.

However, it sounds like yours is stuck in the vent mode. Take off the dash pad [not difficult] and you can see a good bit of the ductwork. There are several doors [3, I believe], but only one determines whether the air flow is directed to defrost, vent or floor. Each door [flap] has a metal can which is called a servo-motor and is vacuum controlled.

Behind and on the driver's side of the radio is one servo with a vacuum line going to the top and bottom of the servo. This is so the door can be positioned to direct air flow upward [defrost], downward [floor] or in between [vent].

Find the servo and see the linkage from it. Gently try to move it. It may be that the door is stuck, hoses damaged or the selector switch on the dash is not functioning correctly. The selector has multiple vacuum ports which come into play as the dash lever is moved [i.e. A/C Max, A/C, vent, heat, mix, def].

Hope this helps.

As pointed out with previous posts, you will be more likely to receive the assistance you seek if you take the time to write full sentences and punctuate as though you are addressing a bunch of old guys... many of us are!!!

Guys I do apologize. I rushed through this on my phone between classes. What about the motor behind the glove box tray? I can see one there, one farther up in about the middle behind the radio, then the one out side under the hood is this all or am i missing the one your talking about.

The one under the hood either blocks or allows outside air into the cabin.

The one behind the glove box tray mixes the hot air from the heater coil.
