So after getting my truck (Ranger 1988) back from it sitting for about 5 years in my Uncle's back yard and getting running again I am moving onto the next project with it. When it had been sitting someone had gotten into and butchered all my cables stealing the radio and CB. Come to find out they couldn't even leave my antenna cable in one piece. Instead of pulling the end out of the radio they cut it. So my question becomes, do i have to replace the whole antenna or is there a way to just replace the cable?
I found this http://www.jcwhitney.com/keep-it-cle...58y1988g20u0j1
But I'm not sure how to go about installing it. I would like to keep the antenna if possible so I can keep everything as original as I can.
You have to replace the whole thing, it's pretty straight-forward, remove the cover over the antenna base, remove the mounting screws, and pull the ant. and cable out through the firewall/fender........reverse process with a junk-yard OEM antenna or aftermarket antenna of your choice, hardest part is snaking the new cable up to the radio opening.
There may be factory cable clamps to hold and route the cable under dash, usually just metal tabs you bend over the cable after routed.
You could probably splice it to another cable end. West Marine has a wire antenna WEST MARINE Interior AM/FM Antenna | West Marine slpicinw would save time and aggravation. You may be able to find something similar some where else.
Sorry to hear some low life trashed your truck. After removing any under dash hangers to free up the antenna cable, tie/tape a piece of cord to the end of the old cable before you pull it out, then tape it to the end of the replacement cable to see if you can pull it back in, may save having to remove some panels or the fender liner, anyway worth a try. The antenna is a tuned circuit, so because of electrical impedance matching problems with a splice & possible moisture entry causing problems later, I'd just replace the antenna with a salvage yard donor, as has been suggested. More thoughts for consideration, let us know how it goes.
Ok so I went out and got a whole new antenna system and after sending 2 hours I found out my old mast doesn't remove and I simple had to remove the part underneath it, and learning to fish (using yard and a stick) to bring the new cable through and under the dashboard I finally have the new antenna in. Now onto a bigger problem.
After hunting through all the wires in my truck I have no found I have no power wires for the radio at all. I found all my speaker wires and the ground but no power. I have looked into using a fuse tap to install the radio but I know a radio is suppose to have 2 power wires not just one so I'm not sure how that would work. It is always driving me crazy because I know I had one before. Is there anyways to figure it out and get the 2 power wires hooked back up like they are suppose to be or would I be better off trying to take my truck somewhere and have someone else figure it all out?
