DECIPHERING E-150 1990 CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

Hello forum; my first post here on my E-150 econoline Club Wagon XLT 1990. I recently felt the van chug along while driving, hesitating and almost dying down as if I run out of fuel, but the tanks were full. Recently I have changed both fuel pumps in tank, fuel diverter valve and main fuel pump.

So what is hapening is my check engine lght comes on after a few miles of driving. I haven;t been able to find anything on the net for an E-150 1990 van on the Check Engine fault codes: is there a list where I can check the codes and see what could be the problem? Is there a connector to read the codes? Is an E-150 1990 van an OBDI type and can I read the codes somewhere in the van?

any help or directions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
namarena

There is a EEC connector under the hood, drivers side, on the inner fender for plugging in a OBD I scanner.

There is also a way to short 2 of the pins, and turn the key on and off several time, but I've never done this, as I have a OBD I scanner.

Autozone might be able to read the OBD I code??

From what you write, it seams that your having a problem after the engine get to operating temperature, in other words, out of cold "open-loop" mode.

This could be as simple as a problem with the O2 sensor, or an EGR problem.

Best, if you can get the codes, and on this forum, there are many places that you can find the codes, just do a search, and you'll find the right place.

Here's how to extract the codes from an OBD1 engine without a scanner:

Do a google search for any codes you find, The codes are found in several places on the net, as well as specific fixes for some of the codes.

One thing that will cause some of the symptoms you describe is leaking vacuum hoses.

BTW, did you change the fuel filter when you changed your fuel pumps? That's another source of the problems you mention and it's a cheap fix, about $10-12 for the part plus the tool $6 -8. Be absolutely sure that you depressurize the fuel system before you disconnect the fuel filter.
