Purchase Advice Request

Hello Fellow Ford Dudes,
To make a long story short my '91 F150 was rear ended lately and the insurance company totaled it. A sad day indeed.

I just looked at a '96 F150 with a 4.9 L6 (my '91 is a 4.9) and a 5 speed manual. I noticed the change to mass air among a few other little things. Is this a good thing or not so good. How about the 5 speed. It has 66K miles on it and drives out real nicely. It has the Eddie Bauer trim etc. The owner changed it to manual hubs and it is not the push button 4WD. I didn't have a chance to check the 4WD but will do so before any final decision is made. I was able to talk to the previous owner by phone and he pointed out a couple of small items that I had noticed and
in his words " I have traded it now so there is no reason to lie about anything". He said the 4WD worked fine.

I have reviewed
a recient post about rust etc. and will say that I did notice some around the rear of the truck on the frame and trailer hitch only as well as one of the braces holding the rear tank. I am in Georgia and they use salt here in the winter. I ran my fingers around the inner finder wells and noticed no rust there. There is rust on the oil pan, can this be stopped or at least slowed down.

I like the idea of owning another Big Six since mine carried me 195,000 miles so lay it on me guys. Is there anything else I need to consider. This truck has the stock wheels normal tires and has been serviced with Genuine Ford parts as best as I can tell. Thanks for any advice you can offer and sorry for the long post.

Mike

Sounds like a pretty worthwhile truck. Other than checking out the 4x4 it sounds like you may have a winner.

As far as mass air goes, by all means get it, as far as fuel injection goes it's one of the better setups out there and will allow for a lot more agressive modifying of the engine if you're into that kind of thing.

If the rust on the oil pan isn't too bad yet, you can sand/clean it all off and use a paint such as POR-15 which should prevent it from coming back. Good preperation is the key though. You could use it on the frame too.
Mass air in and of itself won't give you any more power. It's just a better way for the computer to monitor and control air/fuel ratio.

Thanks for the responses guys. I failed to mention that this truck had 3:55 gears and it did have quite a bit more pep than I am used to.

An oil leak around the dipstick like I have should cure the rust on the oil pan.
