I remember back in the day I de-torqued my 67 mustang's lugnuts because the shops tightened them so tight I could not get them off when I had a flat.

What tool do y'all use to determine their tightness? I need to get me one of those.

LOL. The problem I have is that I cannot get a normal wrench on the KMC wheels that came with the vehicle. All I have is a thin sleeve that fits between the bolt and wheel with a small hole in the end for a thin rod to twist. Not exactly ideal for applying a precise amount of pressure.

Me too, at least to get close to 150 ft-lbs. Then i use a torque wrench for the final bit on each lugnut. I use a 8" impact extension so my knuckles are away from tire, and push down on the wrench, way easier than pulling..

I set my wrench to 150, and remember to dial it back to 0 when done to help keep the spring accurate....

Just a note, when torque is applied, you should use some sort of lubricant. If you just have metal on metal, the torque will not be accurate. I loosened mine and put a drop of oil at the washer face.

To be specific the oil should go between the nut and the washer these nuts are designed to rotate there,

Don't forget, the threads.... That's just as important as any other part.

So I had new tires installed today, drove 20 miles home and took out the torque wrench, they where all a little loose. I'd say 1/8th turn or so, but non the less, not the 165ft lbs. I'll prob recheck them two more times, at 50 more miles, than 100.

I make it a habbit to check things out when anyone else touches my wheels. I'd say they get things right 10% of the time, especially tire shops. But, even decent mechanics forget to check it all out. You need to check the center covers on your wheels immediately. I've lost several on the way home from the tire shop. One time, I found one missing and another sticking out. I tried to get the one that was sticking out to go on but it wouldn't ... wait for it .. because my wheel lock was still on one of the lug nuts. I've also had to hammer an impact socket on my wheel locks to get them off because I wound up with no tool.
Before I take a vehicle in, I put a note on the dash reminding me to make sure the center caps are either on or preferably IN the vehicle and that I have my wheel lock tool. I take the note off after I've checked the torque and am sure everything is good. Confidence level in the shops around my area is extremely low.
