Thanks. Swapping a powerstroke in my truck. Coming out of an auto and I have a ZF5 to put behind it.

The guy I got the truck from swapped out the auto for the manual. He put a diesel zf5 in it. Said he had to drill a couple out or something.

It's the 460 trans. The 460 and 7.3 bellhousings are similar enough that some people have redrilled it for the swap.

I checked the numbers on the tranny plate to confirm what he said when I bought it. I can't remember the numbers but they matched what I found online saying it was from a diesel.

Thanks for the info. I didnt know that could be done. I bet the diesel trans would hold up pretty good behind a 460.

Internally it's the same tranny. Only difference is ZF requires synthetic fluid in it behind a diesel (and the bolt pattern, of course).

I'll have to remember the synthetic fluid. The diesel zf5 is rated for more torque so I figured something had to be different.

Actually, it's not. The S5-42 is rated for 420 ft-lb and the S5-47 is rated for 470 ft-lb. But the S5-47 replaced the S5-42 in '96 (or was it '97); it was a "generational" change in the tranny, not a difference based on the engine it was mounted behind.

-Actually some of the gear ratios are a little different in the gasser trannys. Bill was going to put a diesel case on a 460's trannys internals for different ratios that the gasser tranny has. I don't recall which gears the ratio was different on though.

^^^^ Oh yes, forgot about the gear ratios. ZF used to have the ratio information on their web site. They still only had the S5-42 and S5-47 numbering (representing the torque rating), for whatever reason. You'd think they'd also have a -A and -B or something, for the different ratios.

I built that trans and got to tow with it once, then the input shaft seal started leaking, so I put the original trans back in until I can do a full rebuild on the gasser/diesel hybrid. I had all the ratios wrote down but can't find the paper at the moment. The gas trans has a way lower 1rst gear, and 2nd and 3rd are also lower. Reverse is way lower also. Makes a nice trans to tow heavy with, but not loosing any driveability on the interstate. OD on the diesel is 0.77, and on the gas it's 0.76, not enough to tell a difference. The only gas trans that will work for this though is one that was behind a 460.
