Are you looking for factory units? then anything within that generation should work. ( 97-03) and stick to extended cab or Super cab. The next generation 04-08. the super cab is a touch longer and the brackets are different.
You of course can get aftermarket units fairly cheep....but you get what you pay for there, & most are made in China. There are a couple still made here.

I can't really speak to which ones, or trim levels came with Nerf bars/ tube steps. SO many different customers likes and dislikes. I think back then it might have been considered a dealer add on feature. Meaning that if a customer ordered a truck with Nerf bars/ tube steps the dealer added them at the point of sale rather coming from the factory with them on. But, Mine is a 02' super cab FX4 package, pretty sure it came with the black Nerf bars/ tube steps that you speak of as part of its option package, if that helps.

can't speak to weather or not they are OK...I never have ordered from there.

Personally, top contenders when I was looking hard were Iron Cross and Nfab.
I'm trying to hold out for the 5" oval chrome that were a factory option. I think they were more on the F250 or black...they're a bit wider for a better foot placement upon exiting/entering. ( but that just my preference or a sign I'm getting old). I feel like the foot gets too close to the rocker with a more widely used 3" and 4"
I prolly will have to do a little fab work to get them on...but I have seen them on some F150's in parking lots, generally they were on Lariats or KR, so I know it can be done.
