Trouble - Help

OK guys, truck was running great a couple of weeks ago. Since then it stalls occasionally and just today I have trouble starting it and then stalling. Also, the breaks, right before stopping, make a crunching sound. All these things worry me 'cause I have to drive from my college here in Massachusetts back to good ol' California in about three weeks. Help me out here fellas, I need it bad. Thanks

Trouble - Help

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Apr-02 AT 01:49 AM (EST)]Oh yeah, the starter is less than two years old. The seleniod is less than a year old and so is the alternator... One more thing: its really sluggish when driving and even when doing 30mph+ it sometimes feels like it going to stall.

Trouble - Help

Go to this website and learn how to pull/read troublecodes yourself:

http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html

If you get the "all is good" code 11, then you probably need to do a major tuneup. That means plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor. Also clean the IAC, idle air control, valve. It controls how your truck idles.

If you get definite trouble codes, post back and we can help you solve the problem.

As for your brakes...pull the wheels, fronts first, and inspect the pads and shoes. Front pads are easy to replace, even for a novice, but you may need a manual (Chilton, Haynes) as a guide. If your back brakes are shot, pay $70 per axle for a good replacement job at a reputable shop...even if you have to wire home for $$$. That'll be much cheaper than you can get it done if it breaks down on the road between Mass. and CA. Trust me, I've been there, done that and it sucks.

Another thing to check during your tuneup is fuel delivery. A fuel pressure check may be in order. Also, with that many miles it is still possible that the fuel filter has never been replaced and is finally clogged, but usually they start and idle ok, just can't run fast.

I know what you are saying, but I change the fuel filter every summer... less than 20,000....
