Just bought my dream truck, a 79 F150. It's got a 3 on the tree. It is all original and I don't want to tear out the am radio. Had to replace the dash speaker but am radio is well, am radio. I've decided to add a cd player without destroying the dash. Ive seen some pics and made a cardboard prototype floor console. Any ideas as to what to cover it with. I was was thinking about using mdf and then either painting or covering with vinyl, which would be a new experience for me.
The front left box would be for a cell phone and the deeper box on the right would be for other miscellaneous. I've got room on the back, under the radio slot, to add a small speaker or two, on the sides. I'm looking for any advice or opinions before start purchasing materials.
Build it out of MDF (very stable) and then apply/staple fleece fabric, fiberglass resin to harden it, and then some skin coats of lightweight body filler. Sand, finish, and paint. It's what audio customizers do for subwoofer and other custom speaker enclosures and interior panels.
There are quite a few Youtube videos showing how... Therefore ya watch, learn, do... The salvage yard is a good place to get the cupholder inserts, coin bins, etc.
Btw, post a well documented mini-build thread and ya just might make it into the Tech Thread Compilation sticky!
Exactly what I'm looking to do. Not having the shifter there, I'm going to add a couple of cup holders and a catch all box for phone, change, etc.
I looked at the fiberglass idea. It's pretty involved but would look really nice. Still not sure what I'll cover it with. I had to cut down the design a little. The dry fit was way way long. I was creating and watching my beloved Royals last night, so I never made it to the truck for an actual fit. Here is what I've got now.
Here's where I'm
at now. In need of some major wood filler and then sanding, and repeat a few times. I'm also going to have to cut the back of the console at a slight downward slope. It's a tight squeeze in the truck right now
